Glastonbury 2022!
Glastonbury was back this weekend after 2 years and it was great but what I found really special about this year is just how much female talent was pushed and really shined.
In this male dominated music space, it’s really good to see other voices come through. As I was watching the highlights back from the weekend, It just found myself drawn to the female artists more, maybe that was just my preference but there were so many talented musicians that I wanted to highlight some here!
There were lots of diverse headliners at the festival but I really wanted to talk about 3 female or female fronted acts that stood out to me in particular!
Wolf Alice
So I might be a little bit biased, but I love Wolf Alice and their performance here at Glastonbury was an amazing example of why they’re such an exciting band. They had a close call at this gig, They were in LA doing some gigs and their plane got cancelled shortly before they were due to go onstage at Glastonbury so they had to ask fans if they had a private plane just to get to the show, but they sure did make it worth it! The particular highlight was during “Last man on the earth” when Ellie (The lead vocalist) sat at the front of the stage and sung to the crowd only to break into an emotional climax of the song, There was also “How Can I Make it OK?” which is probably my favourite song from the band, and hearing the crowd chant back the chorus was absolutely incredible. Special shoutout to “Giant Peach” as well, the end section of that song will never not be the best thing ever. Hearing the crowd cheer for as long as they did for this band just really shows you that they’re something special, we were all very glad they got there in the end.
Mitski
So I’ve been a fan of Mitski for a little while, I first found out about her back in 2019 when she released her “Be The Cowboy" album. The single “Nobody” which is simultaneously the biggest ear-worm and the most heart breaking song you’ve ever heard but watching her perform at this set was incredible and I’ve become way more of a fan now. She has a real theatricality about her performance and it’s great to see the contrast between her staying in character for the entire song and the band just going crazy and having the best time behind her. One thing I will say about Mitski is that she has the most adoring fans ever, they were all just loosing their minds at everything she did and it was very infectious. The highlights for me in this set were definitely hearing “Nobody” because I love it. Washing Machine Heart was amazing, You can really hear the crowd in that one. There was also a part in the set where she broke character and smiled for a moment at just how much adoration she was getting and It did make me laugh. She really does have a special way of phrasing things and some of her songs are so personal and gut wrenching, it’s not surprising that her fans love her as much as they do. After watching this set I feel like I’ve been through all of her break ups! An amazing performer and songwriter all around!
Jessie Ware
Jessie Ware’s latest album “What’s Your Pleasure” was my favourite album of 2020, and we all know how bad that year was, so to see these songs performed out at a huge festival was just awesome. You can see how much fun Jessie is having and it really gets to the crowd and It sure got to me! You can really see the relief and how amazing it is to be back to almost normal after the year that 2020 was. The stage design really made me take a moment to appreciate just how much effort goes into this whole festival and how incredible it is that it all comes together. The standout highlight has to be the huge confetti cannon at the end of “Save a Kiss” but this whole set was just so much fun from start to finish!
So those were the big stand outs for me but that wasn’t the only ones! A few more names that I really enjoyed included: HAIM, Lianne La Havas, Rosin Murphy, St Vincent, Beabadobee and Arlo Parks.
