Fantastic launch for Drop the Mic!

Drop the Mic! Is a brand monthly open mic for Young Musicians, Singers, Rappers, Bands and those interested in technical skills such as sound and lighting. Brought to you by The Song School. It’s an opportunity for young people to hone their performance, new writing and new musical performance skills in front of a supportive community of like-minds.

The aim of the initiative is to not only provide a safe space to further music performance skills, but also to bring young people together to help them meet others with similar interests and foster the next generation of Southend’s Music Scene.

Every month, the Drop the Mic! team from The Song School will be at Twenty-One to host the event. And as well as the Open Mic itself, they will be hosting a series of specialist workshops starting during the September session, where a sound engineer will provide the opportunity to get involved in live sound, including setting up before the event and doing sound during the event itself.

Louisa Strachan, Director of The Song School says; “We see many of our students heading off to cut their teeth in the adult open mic scene. We wanted to give them and other young aspiring music artists from across the area the opportunity to hone their skills amongst their peers; which is what this event is all about”

The project has received support from the Community Investment Board, meaning the project is free for all young people to attend and take part in.

Paula Morgan, Community Investment Board Member says; “The Community Investment Board is delighted to be part of initiatives that contribute to the wellbeing of our city's young people. This includes supporting free access to, and engagement in, artistic endeavours, as seen through our partnership with Drop the Mic!, a platform presented by The Song School”.

The first Drop the Mic! event took place in August with a full rostra of performers. The event is now planned to take place every month at community arts venue Twenty-One on Southend Seafront. To find out more including how to register to perform, please click here
